Our Story: Our tradition of making tortilla chips from the finest ingredients and methods goes back nearly 40 years to a memorable day in June 1971 when we made our first tortilla chip. Carmen Suarez, mother and grandmother to owners Eugene Suarez, Sr. and Eugene, Jr., had made authentic tortillas all of her life; first in her native Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico and then here, after immigrating to the US. Carmen taught us all about the art of Mexican cooking and her instructions for making tortilla chips were simple: use the best ingredients (start with whole kernel corn, not commercial flour) and use stone grinding to prepare the corn masa. Growing up, Carmen had used a stone metate to grind her corn, just as generations had before her. She knew that stone grinding produced masa with a unique texture and released the true flavor of the corn. We listened to our Nana (Grandmother) and to this day our Nana's Cocina Tortilla Chips are made only from stone ground corn. To achieve our authentic taste, we use traditional hand-cut lava stones imported from Mexico for our grinding.
